BURLINGAME, IT'S A SMALL TOWN Interview with Mark at the Mic [#85]
Livability
Housing and transportation are key to supporting working families and diversity in Burlingame.
Burlingame is doing a good job constructing new housing, including affordable homes, in a manner consistent with community-centered development, as outlined in the General Plan. Our city needs to continue building new housing, especially affordable units, so everyone has a decent place to call home.
District 2 is welcoming new multi-family homes in North Rollins, and Burlingame needs to embed resources and services in this new neighborhood. We should explore possibilities for a small park or playground and library services, possibly regular bookmobile service or a library outpost (e.g., SMC Libraries outpost in Pacifica).
To preserve the beauty of our existing residential neighborhoods, the General Plan places development along transit corridors. For this transit-oriented development to work, we need enhanced public transportation, shuttles, bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure, and safe Caltrain crossings. In addition, restoring weekday service at the Broadway Caltrain station is important to provide commuters with a functional alternative and to enhance foot traffic for the businesses on Broadway.
Safety
Safe streets and climate-resilient infrastructure are needed to protect all residents.
Public safety is essential for residents and businesses to thrive. In addition to safety from crimes, we also need safe streets to walk, bike, and drive.
The El Camino Real Roadway Renewal Project will bring long-needed pedestrian accessibility, drainage improvement, and roadway rehabilitation across the entire length of El Camino Real in Burlingame. Burlingame needs to work hand-in-hand with Caltrans to ensure residents and business owners are informed of road closures and detours. Construction will be disruptive but is long overdue to improve safety and visibility on this critical thoroughfare.
Due to climate change, we face more safety risks from flooding, strong winds, wildfire smoke, and rising sea levels. We must continue funding to maintain our community infrastructure, which is often our first line of resiliency to disasters.
Community & Economic Vibrancy
Burlingame is amazing because of its inclusive community and strong local businesses.
However, we cannot become complacent and assume that our community will remain vibrant. In District 2, we must support our local businesses on Broadway, Rollins, and Old Bayshore. We are so fortunate to have a variety of small shops, groceries, restaurants, cafes, and salons on Broadway - within a short walk or bicycle ride for many residents in District 2. By shopping at these businesses, we support our local economy and create community by seeing our neighbors and friends.
Community vibrancy depends on forming connections between residents. The new town square under construction near Burlingame Ave between Park Road and Lorton Ave will be a great asset to our community. Intended to be "Burlingame's Living Room," the square will serve as a public gathering space. As the Broadway Specific Plan is created and the North Rollins area is transformed with housing, our city should use placemaking to incorporate small public gathering elements that foster community in these areas.
